City hosts a weekend of sports and games

The City of Cape Town’s Recreation and Parks Department hosted the annual Joe Slovo/Phoenix Sports Day drawing hundreds of youth to the Community Sports Field and Joe Slovo Recreation Centre where they participated in a number of sport and recreation activities.
The sports day took place at two venues to accommodate more activities and provide for the 500 residents in Ward 4 who took part in the tournaments. Most participants were from Phoenix, Joe Slovo, Summer Greens, Milnerton, and the surrounding areas.
The various sporting codes also attracted spectators who came to cheer on their teams, watching from the sidelines.
'Community sport and recreation programmes provide a safe and supportive environment for individuals to engage in physical activities, build an appreciation for health and fitness and are crucial to combating social ills.
'They allow for social interaction and promote inclusive communities, creating a sense of purpose and community by fostering relationships and creating a sense of belonging. Additionally, they provide a platform to showcase their skills, talents, and passions and help foster a sense of pride in the community, as well as promoting hub programmes and activities,' said Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Patricia van der Ross.
Evelina Tshabalala, South African icon and athlete, participated in athletics and running activities with the young people as part of the day.
She is recognised widely for her achievements as a marathon runner and her work as an AIDS activist.
Her enduring spirit and ability to relate to many hardships made her an inspiration to many. Her success as an athlete demonstrates to youth that she overcame many challenges in her life, and that they can do the same.
An unforeseen challenge arose on the day regarding the boxing ring structure, while rugby was also postponed and will be rescheduled for Heritage Day.
On the event days, external parties made a significant contribution to the success of the sports day. These included community stakeholders, sport fraternities, sport clubs, local football associations and local businesses.
Initiated by Ward 4 Councillor Anthony Benadie in collaboration with the Recreation and Parks Department, sport events on the day ranged from netball and soccer, to athletics and recreational games.
'The investment in our youth through sport and recreation cannot be underestimated. Healthy bodies and minds will develop healthy communities. It is an honour and a privilege for the City of Cape Town, particularly Ward 4, to once again successfully host the annual sport day.
'All sporting codes had a tremendous two days of activity, and we are extremely proud of all who participated. During this past weekend, we were fortunate to witness some Protea netball players and Bafana Bafana soccer players in the making,' said Councillor Benadie.
